Writing for Money – First Steps

mommy-blogger (2)A lot of people ask me – how do you make money blogging – I say to them “it takes a lot of blogging to make money from it.” It’s a good answer because it’s actually difficult to start up making money with a blog – even if you already have one. Imagine trying to come up with a niche blog (the best kind to monetize) AND coming up with three months worth of topics (because you need a BLOG before you can even begin to make money with it) AND trying to market it and monetize it? First things first ladies – if you want to try and supplement your income by blogging then first decide what kind of blog you will be writing. Research some up and coming (or safe and popular) blogs and go from there. Decide on a name and buy the domain! You aren’t going to make ANYTHING if you have a “freebie” blog.

Then – you need articles or “blog posts” on your blog. It will take you a couple months to get going. You might be able to back date a few BUT you need time for the majority of these to make their way onto search engines. Your blog is useless if you aren’t getting it onto the search engines. You want people to FIND you don’t you? Do a little research on a little thing called SEO (search engine optimization). You can optimize your blog easily and it’s super important that you do.

While you are getting your posts going go ahead and join Google’s Adsense program. These are the banners/graphics you see on the side of a lot of blogs. It doesn’t bring in a TON – but it has the ability to. Also join some affiliate marketing sites – especially Amazon’s.

If you choose to stick with affiliate marketing fine. But you can also do a little “paid blogging” because advertisers are always looking for ways to get their products out there and “word of mouth marketing” (or in this case blog marketing) is easy for them, easy for you and easy on their wallets. You might end up writing about such topics as cheap horse insurance but you will have a few dollars more than you did yesterday!

I personally stick with a little of both although with a new baby – finding the time for blogging doesn’t come easy.

But seriously – all jokes about horse and pony insurance aside – blogging for money can be a fun experience. Supplementing your income is an even MORE fun experience when you can do it from home too! Just do NOT expect the money to roll in overnight and do NOT expect to “get rich” (quick or otherwise).

The Letter of the Day is …

I currently have an “F” in my Web Client Scripting class (in other words – Javascript). It’s not that I don’t “get” it really – it’s more of a timing issue.

I’ve been sorta swamped with work since attending the conference last week. I’m totally not complaining because this is what I want – completely! I’m just saying that this Javascript class has sorta taken a backseat to my design work.

It’s so nice to have actual, paying clients. I love working with them, love designing for them and love seeing their comments when I make a website that they love. It makes me smile!

My husband thinks that I put too much work into my work. But I do that only because I am really still learning (hence my cheap prices! lol). I’m IN school – I’m not technically IN the field. So – my first few clients are really guinea pigs in my wonderfully large development experiment! Shh, don’t tell them …

Okay – so today I will be getting two websites (blogs) online. Dwan and Alan have been tremendously patient with me and are very understanding when I post on Twitter with how much I hate the “Thesis” theme. Well – I don’t really HATE it – I actually LOVE it – I just have to LEARN it. It’s completely worth the money – it just takes some time. Y’know – learning curve and all.

Hopefully Noel’s blog will be up this weekend. It’s pretty much all done – just a few more tweaks. She’s being incredibly patient with me also and I love her for that.

Tammy’s layouts will be sent tomorrow! TOMORROW!!

Lisa’s new project will be worked on next week (I will make the due date sweetie – promise).

Gosh, anything else? I have to get back to work on my schoolwork – so follow me on Twitter @starryskye81 if you wanna hear me run my mouth some more!

Sponzai The Newest IZEA Property

I am SO excited to announce on here (along with like – everyone else at IzeaFest) that the BIG DEBUT this year is Sponzai! Sponzai is a cool new way to make money with your blog – sponsors write their own guest post including multimedia and links. Sponsors then select the blogs on which they want to distribute their pre-written post. Bloggers earn cash for posting the content! I watched my table neighbors try it out and it’s just a matter of adding in your blog(s), choosing your price and waiting for the opportunities to roll in.

The disclosure shows up right up at the top of the guest post – so there is complete transparency.

I’m all signed up and have my two best blogs in the system! Can’t wait to see my first post!

Check it out at Sponzai.com 🙂

Ps. This obviously not a paid post … I am just really a HUGE fan of this company and really excited about this new program.

First Day/Night at #IzeaFest and #hos

Izea Fest 2009 Blogging & Social Media Conference

Before I begin – I just want to say that whomever thought up the Twitter hashtag of “#hos” to represent “Howl-O-Scream” should’ve been flicked in the ear. Ho’s? Really?

Anyway … I wrote this post on Thursday when I hadn’t quite realized that I could pull in internet from the lobby of the hotel!

Well .. I made it to Orlando for IzeaFest and am currently sitting in my room at the beautiful (and quite tall) Renaissance hotel at Sea World waiting for my phone to connect to the internet. Unfortunately, I can only pull ‘free’ WiFi down in the lobby (for 3 hours … ?) and I’ve been travelling since around 4:00 this morning and am in no way shape of form ready to ‘mingle’ looking like this!

Lisa (my roomate) is speaking on a panel of bloggers today at a meet and greet. But I don’t want to pay to get in (and actually have no clue where it is anyway) so I figure I will jump in the shower and make myself presentable before she gets back and we head out to Busch Gardens’ Howl-O-Scream with a ton of other bloggers and social media geeks (such as ourselves!)

I met up with Courtney at Orlando airport and we shared lunch and a cab to the hotel. I’m thinking her and her roomies (Heather and Heather’s daughter Crystal) are in the same vicinity as Lisa and I – but Courtney can’t remember her room number! Thus begins the insanity that is Izea Fest!

Will write up more updates later! I’m too busy listening to a great panel right now talking about “What Advertisers Want” featuring Brett Bumeter, George Smith, John Andrews, Joseph Jaffe and Zena Weist 🙂

Ignore this: The module apologizes in a climate.

Getting Ready for IzeaFest!

October 1st will find me on a plane headed for Orlando, Florida and one of the biggest most awesome-est blogging & social media conferences in the world … IZEA FEST! What the heck is IzeaFest you ask? Well … IzeaFest is an interactive event designed to educate, inform and connect social media enthusiasts. The world’s foremost social media experts will be there, some of the best bloggers will be there and there will even be a few web celebrities (like … Ted Murphy, Brett Bumeter, Drew Bennet, Chris Brogan, Julia Roy, Lucretia Pruitt, Rae Hoffman and Wendy Piersall).

There will be panels teaching everything from ‘what advertisers want’ to ‘social media promotion’ and believe me – you WILL LEARN SOMETHING! I swear I took at least 10 pages worth of notes last year. Along with all that note-taking and learning stuff you also get something WAY better out of IzeaFest. Plenty of time to network with other internet professionals (and not-so professionals! lol …)

I met the most AMAZING people last year and I am proud to call them my friends. I will be attending IzeaFest again this year and am so incredibly excited to see those I met last year and meet tons of new people!

Here are some snapshots from last year …

I met Lisa – serial Mommyblogger and all around awesome chick. She’s my very best bloggy buddy and we will be ‘roomies’ again this year! Believe me – she’s a good girl to have on your side when you get completely drunk at a social media get-together. Just sayin’ … not that I actually do that or anything *shifty eyes* I also met Heather – the lovely lady from Beautiful British Colombia! She’s a doll and a LOT of fun to hang out with! This year Heather and I plan on imbibing in all the Orlando Ice Bar has to offer!

Met and hung out with Drew Bennet (also known as “Ben Spark”) and his gorgeous wife Allison (photo taken by Drew with his cool Xshot camera extender – GET ONE!) along with Heather and Lisa!

Had shots with the Izea Man himself … Ted Murphy! Er … maybe had a few too many shots …

End Party End Party

End Party End Party

Yes, I guess I was ‘that girl’ who drank too much, put on a princess crown and grabbed everyone (Cass, Marisa, Carrie, Ashley and Alli) for pictures. Hey you know – I had fun … I don’t remember much … but I had fun!

End Party

I so wasn’t the only one though.

So yeah … needless to say it was a FUN event and I learned a lot. Believe me – it’s paid off in the long run. This year all my expenses are being covered by either sponsorships or money I’ve made solely online (through my blogs, design work or paid twittering). If you want to learn how to make real money online THIS is the event you need to be at!

Ted just recently posted on the Izea Blog “9 Things You Should Bring to IZEAFest at SeaWorld” and it was such a funny but true article! Bring your face (ew … what a thought Ted!), bring your business cards (I got mine at Staples for like – $30 … or you can check out the minicards at moo.com), bring pants (because apparently there was a question there?), bring sunscreen (it’s Florida people … nuff said), bring your computer (or iphone) because believe me – you will need it to twitter about weird (or awesome) speakers, twitter about who’s wearing what and upload pictures of people kissing alligators or hanging out in elevators).

Also – very important – bring clothes you don’t care about. You WILL get messy if you participate in the IZEAHunt event. Believe me.

Bring pain killers (and bottled water to beat those networking hangovers), bring your camera and bring a GREAT attitude! Because if you are a jerk we WILL be twittering bad things about you AND posting your picture on Flickr! You got me?

See you there!
