Across the Universe

Last week I watched “Across the Universe” at my friends’ house. A couple days ago I watched it AGAIN (same friends’ house!) and loved it even more.

Here is the description that Amazon has for it:

Set in America during the Vietnam War, Across the Universe is a powerful love story set against a backdrop of political and social unrest: it’s a story of soul-searching, self-doubt, and individual powerlessness cleverly conveyed through a multitude of Beatles songs. Like young adults all across America during the 1960’s, Jude (Jim Sturgess), Lucy (Evan Rachel Wood), Max (Joe Anderson), Sadie (Dana Fuchs), Prudence (T.V. Carpio), and JoJo (Martin Luther) are in turmoil over the war; questioning their individual roles in the war effort and struggling to find a way to hold true to their beliefs while making a difference in the world. While love proves a powerful uniting force, its limitations become clear as relationships are strained and broken over individual perceptions of responsibility to cause and country.

All the main characters have names based from Beatles songs! I’m a HUGE Beatles fan to begin with, and I’m not huge on remakes of certain classic songs; but this soundtrack absolutely rocked my socks – the movie was equally amazing.

Here is one of the songs from the movie, sung by TV Carpio who plays “Prudence” (as in “Dear Prudence”) in the movie. Her voice makes my heart ache, it’s beautiful – she performs an amazing rendition of the song “I Want to Hold Your Hand” in the movie.

I am truly in awe of this movie. I can’t think of another recent movie that has rocked my socks as much as this one.

  1. It’s an awesome movie isn’t it? Beatles fan here too, and yes, TV Carpio’s version of I want to hold your hand is heart wrenching, mournful, achy.
The Beatles version is all happy and upbeat, her version is painful, longing.
    I love it.
I downloaded the whole soundtrack the same night I watched the movie. It’s damn good.
Helter Skelter by Dana Fuchs is awesome too.

  2. The image at the top of your post, what is that? It is pretty cool!
