Me: “I played Minecraft last night, so unless you change your skin you are the 10th Doctor.”

Xander: “Why were you the 10th Doctor?”

Me: “Because I didn’t want to be Herobrine.”

JRR Tolkien Translation of Beowulf Being Published

One of the oldest, longest and most influential works in the history of Old English will soon be experienced through the eyes of one of the world’s most beloved fantasy authors.

J.R.R. Tolkien was a prominent Beowulf scholar; his Beowulf: The Monsters and the Critics was a turning point in the modern study of the poem, moving the focus from its historical to its literary significance. Tolkien also left two substantial unpublished manuscripts concerning Beowulf. The first, a more substantial version of the previously mentioned critical essay, was edited byMichael D.C. Drout and published as Beowulf and the Critics. The second is a partial poetic and full prose translation of the epic, including commentary. The latter was a minor media sensation on its ‘discovery’ in 2003 and was also to be prepared for publication by Drout. [ source ]

Tolkien’s version of the epic story is to finally be published for the first time in an edition which his son Christopher Tolkien says sees his father “enter[ing] into the imagined past” of the heroes.

Although the author completed his own translation in 1926, he “seems never to have considered its publication”, said Christopher Tolkien today, announcing the Tolkien estate’s new deal with HarperCollins to publish Beowulf: A Translation and Commentary on 22 May. The book, edited by Christopher Tolkien, will also include the series of lectures Tolkien gave at Oxford about the poem in the 1930s, as well as the author’s “marvellous tale”, Sellic Spell.

Tolkien’s “creative attention to detail” in his lectures gives rise to a sense of the immediacy and clarity of his vision”, said his son. “It is as if he entered into the imagined past: standing beside Beowulf and his men shaking out their mail-shirts as they beached their ship on the coast of Denmark, listening to the rising anger of Beowulf at the taunting of Unferth, or looking up in amazement at Grendel’s terrible hand set under the roof of Heorot.”

Tolkien also closely considers the dragon which would slay Beowulf, writing of how the beast was “snuffling in baffled rage and injured greed when he discovers the theft of the cup” – an image reminiscent of his own thief Bilbo Baggins, sneaking into the lair of the dragon Smaug in The Hobbit – but, said his son, the author “rebuts the notion that this is ‘a mere treasure story … just another dragon tale’”.

“Beowulf: A Translation and Commentary,” including the translations, a series of lectures given about the poem, and a “marvelous tale” written by Tolkien, will be released on May 22 through HarperCollins.

It’s Always Here to Come Back To

My blog, that is. It’s always here when I need to come back and write, but it never chastises me for leaving in the first place. It’s a space for me to clear my head of all the static and just let the words flow out onto “paper” (rather, screen). I’ve had this domain name – Starryskye – since 2000 and it’s become something way more advanced than I had ever imagined while I was typing out simple HTML code into my Frontpage 2000 install.

I think it’s time for me to treat this blog as my friend and ally again. To channel my creativity and actually make my brain function more often – instead of just “going through the motions” of life like I have been lately.

Hence – the simple layout. It won’t last long, because I’ve always got to have some wild “pops” of color going on (in fact, as I write this my hair is shocking pink colored).

I think I need to find time to breathe. This is why I am still awake (and writing) at midnight. It’s quiet with the exception of the low sounds of “The Civil Wars” playing off my iPhone. The air conditioner is blowing. The children are asleep. The husband is away. It’s just me and my computer. Thoughts becoming words.

It’s rather nice sometimes.

Weed, Emma Watson and the End of the World

I love that Emma Watson is getting further and further away from her “Hermione” counterpart WITHOUT turning into your stereotypical “child-star-turned-drug-whore.” That said – grownup Emma, wielding an ax and a super cute haircut, dropping the F-Bomb and robbing several men of liquor – was just ONE of the hysterical moments featured in the new movie “This is the End.”

Thanks to the Aloha Agency, LLC (who doesn’t have a website – but has a Facebook) – I got to bring my husband on a DATE and take him to see a screening of This is the End (which comes out tomorrow!)

This is the End is a full-length movie based on a 2007 short comedy film called Jay and Seth versus the Apocalypse  film written by writer-actors Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, and director Jason Stone. The movie follows longtime buddies Seth Rogen and Jay Baruchel to a party at James Franco’s house where they (and a host of other celebrities) are faced with the impending apocalypse.

The movie is rated “R” for a reason! Seth and Jay “reconnect” with lots (and lots) of weed and 3D gaming at the start of the movie. Then, at the celebrity party (featuring cameos from Rhianna, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, David Krumholtz, Aziz Ansari, Kevin Hart and many, many more) there is rampant drug use (apparently, Michael Cera is a MAJOR coke-head with a penchant for bathroom sexcapades) as well as booze, general shenanigans and a GIANT art piece shaped like a dong. It’s HILARIOUS for those of us who of legal-age to laugh at this stuff! But, seriously, don’t bring the kids!

I gotta say – this movie was HILARIOUS! Sure it’s ridiculous and stupid – but there’s sort of a message! It’s about friendship, good deeds, facing your fears … and drugs! Yay! I recommend grabbing your honey or a group of friends and seeing This is the End. It’s a crazy, fun ride that provides lots of belly laughs, celebrities falling into a Hellmouth and Channing Tatum in a Gimp suit!
